About WVU Cycling
The WVU Cycling has two aspects to it. First is the club which is composed of university students, faculty, staff, and community members. The second is the racing team, composed only of full time students, undergraduate and graduate who compete against other schools in the ACCC, Atlantic Coast Cycling Conference.
The club is West Virginia University’s ambassador to the Morgantown cycling community. We host several community projects, do trail maintenance, have group rides, and throw a few parties. There are around 50 members. We’re also trying to get more publicity for cycling and WVU Cycling by promoting open races that the public can race in.
The racing team represents WVU in the ACCC, competing in both Mountain and Road seasons. We race mountain bikes in the fall and road bikes in the spring, but we ride both all year. We host one race per season. We compete in Division I against schools in WV, MD, VA, and NC such as University of Maryland, United States Naval Academy, University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, and North Carolina State University. ACCC Race Schedule
We’ve been the ACCC Mountain Bike champions for the past nine years (2000-2008), with no intentions of ending the streak.
Morgantown is a great area to ride, road and mountain. The terrain in and around Morgantown is not flat in the least, for road riding expect painful grades upwards of 6-11% and 40+ mph descents. However, there are also routes for the less expirenced or hilly inclined including move than 40 miles of rail trail, centered in Morgantown.
Our success in mountain season might have something to do with the trails around WVU. There are two separate trail systems within a bike-able distance to campus. One (White Park) is an excellent place for beginners to learn how to ride, and to learn basic skills like log hopping. The other (Bakers Ridge / WVU farm / West Run), is more technical, has more elevation gain/loss and has more trails. Within a 30 minute drive there are several other places to ride, including Coopers Rock State Forest and Big Bear Lake.
WVU Cycling isn’t just about finding group rides. We’re about community, great friends, a grand time, stellar rides and whooping ass (at least on mountain bikes).
We ride mountain AND road, all year, sometimes at the same time.
